I agree, instead of protecting other countries and their borders, we need to protect our own first.

Our Country needs to work on the regulations/path one must take to become a legal U.S. Citizen. Most of us who were born U.S. citizens don't know what people have to go through in the application process. I have a friend who has been trying to get a green card, a retired person who gets their income from an overseas company. This person doesn't want to take a job from any American, they just want to live here in peace and would contribute to our economy. My friend has been using a lawyer who specializes in this area of the law; and has a relative who is a doctor in the U.S. as a sponsor. My friend has been told to leave the country every six months or so (depending what is put into the passport upon re-entry into the U.S.) and it will usually take at least 11 years. Then once the government tells you that you are under investigation and in-process to get the green card, you may not leave the country for any reason until you are given the result of your application - or you will have to start the process all over again. Most people wouldn't have the funds to travel back and forth every six months or so, for 11 years or more. We need to prioritize people who are not here to take jobs from Americans but are here to spend their money and add to our economy. What if you were a person suffering in their current country, and hearing about the freedom here, and just wanting a place to work to feed their family in freedom. What about the quote on the pedistal below the Statue of Liberty, it says, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of you teamming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Do we still mean it? What if our immigrant ancestors were made to jump so many hurdles to be allowed to live here. Would you be here now? I understand we need to check people out and make sure these people are going to be good citizens, and not a drag on our economy, but does it have to be so hard that people would risk their lives to come in illegally? I agree we need to protect our borders, and that we should screen people before granting entry to someone but do we need to make it so hard?
