Currently, congresspeople can be re-elected an unlimited number of times. This produces a large incentive for congresspeople to continually raise funds for their future re-election campaigns, which are VERY expense (in 2010, John McCain spent over $20-million dollars on his election campaign for the Senate). As a result, many of our congresspeople do favors for special-interest groups in return for contributions to their re-election funds. This results in congresspeople representing special interest groups instead of their own constituents.

It's about time our congresspeople worked for our interests and not their own. For the People By the People! Back to basics!

CONGRESSPEOPLE SHOULD VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME
Monday, Feb 20th, 2012 12:20 PM
Congress and the Senate should not receive Lifetime pay or Benefits. They should be required to live by the same Rules and Laws as ANY American. 1. Their pay should be NO MORE than that of our top Military Officials, 2.Pay into their Health Care,3. Have a set Budget for Assistants,Office, and Travel,(People's Business only). Lead by example!

I believe that the congressmen should be limited by terms, much like the president.

Rather than imposed term limits which would also limit service by the few dedicated public servants, I would like to see an easily accessible database of votes so citizens can readily determine if their representative is voting as promised before election and truly representing their interests. If not, there should be an easy recall process. Salaries should be equal to the median earned income of US citizens including those on public welfare and unemployment benefits in the calculation with earned incomes of $0. Instead of the current election process, I would like to see campaigns limited to one publicly financed mailing to all voters providing all party platforms, bios of candidates, voting records of candidates who have held office, responses to 10 standard questions, and one free form response where the candidates provide any info they wish to US voters. This plus a maximum of 3 publicly funded debates in each major race would be the extent of campaigning. No contributions would be required therefore elected officials can focus on work and not be bought by individuals or corporations. Funds previously contributed but not expended on campaigns should be used to repay the national debt rather than becoming a source of personal wealth for the recipients.

All government legislature should be required to a 2yr term. With a 4yr maximum term, with no re-election possible. They should not earn more than a normal citizen makes in a yr. Not less than $50,000 but not more than $100,000 at the end of the term in office. They like the rest of us, should have to pay yearly Federal and State taxes, social security, medicare, and into a retirement fund, medical insurance, dental and vision. Just like the rest of us. When their term is up, then they need to find another occupation to provide for their families until they are of retirement age to retire. Then they, like the rest of us, use their retirement fund, social security and medicare to live off of, for the rest of their lives...just like the rest of us.Then maybe! Just maybe! They would think twice maybe even three times before cutting medicare and social security benefits!! They are NO better than the rest of us CITIZENS, who have worked hard and deserve a HELL of alot more than any of them do. At least we can say WE put in an HONEST days work, when we get home! CAN THEY??

I agree with all of the payment comments. They should be treated as normal Americans and volunteering isn't a bad idea. Although, I firmly believe if a congressman is good at what they do and The People support him, then he should be able to continue working without limit.

i belive that each state's goverment should provide any pay and benifits to their own repersentive and not the federal goverment. that way they are then beholding to their state. I also belive that congress should meet only four months out of the year to take care of the gouverments busness.

The founding fathers never meant for congressmen to have a lifetime job. Also they should be subject to the same bills they pass for the rest of the population such as health care.
