I am unemployed and trying to find a job. It is hard enough with the job market being what it is, but because I live in Haverhill, MA I am required to Speak Spanish (bilingual/ preferably Spanish) In the long ago past, when immigrants came to the US they had to go through Ellis Island to register that they were entering the country. They could only come here if they were being sponsored by friends or family who found them work or supported them. Learning to speak English was something to be proud of!

There are even places where the government signs are in Spanish.... What's up with that? I used to be required anyone that wanted to be a citizen here had to learn our langauge now it seems they're trying to force us to learn theirs...

I am an emigrant to the US, but it is very frustrating while attending school meetings to have everything presented in English and then waste my time while the whole thing is translated into Spanish. Every person in the United States is here or their own free will and it is the responsibility of all who wish to enjoy the American way to learn and use English! Catering to an emigrant from any county gives them an excuse not to learn and use English.

This country was founded on the English language. The Revolutionary War was fought against the English. Spanish only came with further westward expansion. We won those conflicts also. Government mandated bi-lingual expense to this nation is astronomical. One Nation , One Language.

The USA use to make everyone that became a citizen of the USA to learn and speak the English Language before they were able to be sworn in as an official US Citizen. I think if you cannot read or speak the English Language you need to be deported or learn it and Speak it when in Public places. You came over here to get away from the problems in your own country so please be courteous enough to Speak the English Language since you chose us we did not chose you!!!

There was a reason the founding fathers did not establish an "official" language. America is the land of opportunity, a haven and sanctuary for people from around the world. Our diversity is our greatest strength. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses, yearning to breath free".

All taxpayer funded services including public education and government services should be provided in English only. Because the US is a haven for those from around the world, it is impossible to support all language of all immigrants. The commonality is for immigrants to meet their obligation to learn the language of the country they freely choose to immigrate to. If immigrants require translation services, they should be provided through private sector services, not taxpayer funded.

A requirement to be an American is to be able to speak English. Not Chinese!!!

I work in the non-profit sector and spend my days taking care of people of all races that are in need at a free clinic and a food bank. I am in no way a raciest person. However, I have not been considered for many of the jobs I have applied for in recent years because I can not speak English. I was born in the U.S. was educated in the U.S. but can't get a job in the U.S. in the field I want to work because I cannot speak Spanish. I am willing to bet if I went to Mexico or and other country and demanded services be given to me in English I would be laughed out of that country. So why can other come to the U.S. and refuse to learn English?

I was born and raised in Lawrence MA. Life was great, then the hispanic population increased and my city, houses I lived in, streets I walked, church I attended, GONE. How can anyone justify coming to a city and completely taking over by force? No one speaks English and people are terrified to go there. In essence, they created their own city. Now I see it happening again EVERYWHERE. Not only hispanic but now we are being invaded by islamist terrorists. ENOUGH I say. Bring back America.

A significant amount of taxpayer money could be saved if English would be established as the official language. Could the official language be established at the state level?
